POTS & Dysautonomia

Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome, known as POTS, is a form of dysautonomia and it is triggered when you stand up after lying down.

POTS is a disorder of the autonomic nervous system, which controls functions such as heart rate, blood pressure, and digestion. It is characterized by an abnormal increase in heart rate upon standing up. This can result in a reduction in blood flow to the brain and lead to various symptoms. It can be a debilitating condition that impacts the ability to perform daily tasks and quality of life. The cause of POTS is not fully understood, but it can be related to conditions such as diabetes, hypothyroidism, or autoimmune diseases. If you believe you have POTS, you should seek an evaluation to understand how best to treat it.

common symptoms and signs

What are the symptoms of POTS?

Dizziness or lightheadedness

When standing up, blood can pool in the legs and feet and lead to feelings of dizziness or lightheadedness. This is particularly true when standing up quickly or after being in a seated or lying position for a long period of time.

Rapid heartbeat

Rapid heartbeat and palpitations can be uncomfortable or anxiety-provoking, and can lead to feelings of lightheadedness or fainting.

Fainting

Fainting or near-fainting can happen as a result of the reduced blood flow to the brain when standing up quickly.

Fatigue
The decreased blood flow to the muscles and organs, as well as the physical and emotional strain of dealing with the symptoms of POTS on a daily basis can lead to feelings of fatigue, weakness, or a general feeling of malaise.
Shaking or sweating
As the body tries to increase blood flow to the brain and vital organs, it might lead to shaking or sweating.
Shortness of breath or chest pain
the reduced blood flow to the lungs can lead to shortness of breath or chest pain, and increased heart rate or palpitations can also cause discomfort in the chest.
Nausea
The reduced blood flow to the stomach and intestines can cause abdominal discomfort or nausea.
Difficulty concentrating
Reduced blood flow to the brain can make it more difficult to think clearly or concentrate on tasks. This can affect your ability to work, learn, or perform daily tasks.
Blurring of vision
The reduced blood flow to the eyes can result in visual disturbances such as blurring of vision.
